THURSDAY - May 8
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
Zechariah 4:1-14; Ephesians
4:17-32; Matthew 9:1-8
Eternal God, Author of our
life and End of our pilgrimage: Guide us by your Word and Spirit amid all
perils and temptations, that we may not wander from your way, nor stumble in
the darkness; but may finish our course in safety, and come to our eternal
rest in you. Eternal God, your hand shaped our lives by grace and your hand
rescued us from sin by love. May your hand guide us through this day,
shielding us from all evil, strengthening us to do justice and love. Enable
us, O God, to do all things as unto you; that small things may be filled
with greatness, and great things may be crowned with humility. O God, whom
we cannot love unless we love our neighbors, remove hate and prejudice from
us and from all people, so that your children may be reconciled with those
we fear, resent, or threaten; and live together in your peace. (Add your
prayers.) Amen.
With God's help and love
may your lives be blessed and your labors fruitful as you offer
yourselves gladly in the service of our common Lord.
FRIDAY - May 9
You, O Lord, are full of
compassion and mercy, slow to anger, and rich in kindness.
Jeremiah 31:27-34; Ephesians
5:1-32; Matthew 9:9-17
God our creator, you made all
things in your wisdom, and in your love you save us. We pray for the whole
creation. Overthrow evil powers, right what is wrong, feed and satisfy those
who thirst for justice, so that all your children may freely enjoy the earth
you have made, and joyfully sing your praises. Take all our doubts and
uncertainties, O God, and fill us with such faith that we may be confident
of your love and loyal in the service of him who died and yet lives for us,
Jesus Christ the Lord. Merciful God, you bear the pain of the world. Look
with compassion on those who are sick; cheer them by your word, and bring
healing as a sign of your grace. God of comfort, stand with those who
sorrow; that they may be sure that neither death nor life, nor things
present nor things to come, shall separate them from your love. (Add your
prayers,) Amen.
As God's own, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, and patience, forgiving each other
as the Lord has forgiven you, and crown all these things with love,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
SATURDAY - May 10
Whatever you do, in word
or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ezekiel 36:22-27; Ephesians
6:1-24; Matthew 9:18-26
God, our creator, you have
given us work to do and call us to use our talents for the good of all.
Guide us as we work, and teach us to live in the Spirit who made us your
sons and daughters, in the love that made us sisters and brothers. Remember,
O God, your church. Unite it in the truth of your Word and empower it in
ministry to the world. Remember the world of nations. By your Spirit renew
the face of the earth; let peace and justice prevail. Remember our family
and friends. Bless them and watch over them; be gracious to them and give
them peace. Remember the sick and the suffering, the aged and the dying.
Encourage them and give them hope. Rejoicing in the communion of saints, we
remember with thanksgiving all your faithful servants, whom you have called
from this life. We are grateful that for them death is no more, nor is there
sorrow, crying, or pain, for the former things have passed away. (Add your
prayers.) Amen.
Go forth into the
world, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
SUNDAY - May 11
(Pentecost)
"My word shall accomplish
that which I purpose," says the Lord, "and succeed in the thing for
which I sent it."
Deuteronomy 16:9-12; Acts
4:18-21, 23-33; John 4:19-26
Eternal God, as we are
baptized into the death of Jesus Christ, so give us the grace of repentance
that we may pass through the grave with him and be born again to eternal
life, for he is the One who was crucified, dead, and buried, and rose again
for us, Jesus our Savior. Eternal God, you sent us a Savior, Christ Jesus,
to break down the walls of hostility that divide us. Send peace on earth,
and put down greed, pride, and anger, which turn nation against nation and
race against race. Speed the day when wars will end and the whole world
accepts your rule. God of mercy, you are full of tenderness and compassion,
slow to anger, rich in mercy, and always ready to forgive. Grant us grace to
renounce all evil and to cling to Christ, that in every way we may prove to
be your loving children. (Add your prayers.) Amen.
Go in peace to love and
serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
MONDAY - May 12
If any want to become my
followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and
follow me.
Ezekiel 33:1-11; 1 John
1:1-10; Matthew 9:27-34
New every morning is your
love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the
world. Stir up in us the desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our
neighbors, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ the
Lord. God of all times and places, in Jesus Christ, lifted up on the cross,
you opened for us the path to eternal life. Grant that we, being born again
of water and the Spirit, may joyfully serve you in newness of life and
faithfully walk in your holy ways. God of all joy, fill our souls to
overflowing with the fullness of your grace. Lord, remind us of your triumph
over the tragedy of the cross, and your victory for us over the powers of
sin and death, so that we may reflect your glory as disciples of Jesus
Christ, our risen Lord. (Add your prayers.) Amen.
With God's help and love
may your lives be blessed and your labors fruitful as you offer
yourselves gladly in the service of our common Lord.
TUESDAY - May 13
My sheep hear my voice,
says the Lord. I know them and they follow me; and I give them eternal
life.
Ezekiel 33:21-33; 1 John
2:1-11; Matthew 9:35-10:4
God of our forebears, as your
chosen servant Abraham was given faith to obey your call and go out into the
unknown, so may your church be granted such faith that we may follow you
with courage for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. God of love, as you
have given your life to us, so may we live according to your holy will
revealed in Jesus Christ. Make us bold to share your life, and show your
love, in the power of your Holy Spirit. Mighty God, sovereign over the
nations, direct those who make, administer, and judge our laws; the
President of the United States and others in authority among us; that,
guided by your wisdom, they may lead us in the way of righteousness. (Add
your prayers.) Amen.
Since we are surrounded by
so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and
the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the
race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter
of our faith.
WEDNESDAY - May 14
The sacrifice acceptable
to God is a humble spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will
not despise.
Ezekiel 34:1-16; 1 John
2:12-17; Matthew 10:5-15
Eternal God, you draw near to
us in Christ and make yourself our guest. Amid the cares of our daily lives,
make us attentive to your voice and alert to your presence, that we may
treasure your word above all else. O God, you are infinite, eternal and
unchangeable, glorious in holiness, full of love and compassion, abundant in
grace and truth. Your works everywhere praise you, and your glory is
revealed in Jesus Christ our Savior. Therefore we praise you, blessed and
holy Trinity, one God, forever and ever. Eternal God, send your Holy Spirit
into our hearts, to direct and rule us according to your will, to comfort us
in all our afflictions, to defend us from all error, and to lead us into all
truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Add your prayers.) Amen.
Whatever you do, in word
or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God through him.
